Fosamax treats and prevents osteoporosis after menopause. The drug is also known to treat induced osteoporosis in both men and women.

How Taken

Coming in tablet form, Fosamax is to be taken once daily in the morning on empty stomach. The drug has to be taken with a full glass of water and nothing should be eaten or drunk or even medicines should not be taken for 30 minutes. You should also not lie down for 30 minutes after taking the drug. Take care that the drug is not taken with coffee, mineral water, milk, juice and diary products. Fosamax should only be swallowed and not chewed or suck.

Missed Dose

Missing a dose does not effect the treatment. But do not go for two Fosamax a day.

More Information

It is better not to drink and smoke when on Fosamax medication. If you cannot do without it, better consult the doctor. It is also known that Antacids decrease Fosamax’s effect. It is better to consult the doctor of taking any other medication when taking Fosamax.

Warnings/Precautions

It is better to present all details about your health condition, both past and present, to the doctor. The doctor should be told if there is problem like esophageal ulcers; have low levels of calcium; kidney disease; stomach ulcers; unable to stand or sit upright for 30 minutes. Only if you tell the doctor all these conditions, can he adjust the dosages accordingly. The drug comes under the FDA pregnancy category C, which means taking the drug is harmful to 5the unborn babe. If pregnant or if you think you are going to conceive, better avoid Fosamax. When taking Fosemax, do not breast feed also as the drug pass into the breast milk.
