The generic name of Aygestin is norethindrone acetate. Norethindrone is a type of progesterone which prevents ovulation. This medicine may cause variations in your uterine lining or cervical mucus.

Composition of Aygestin

It is available as 5 mg oral pills. Aygestin is an oral, synthetic, active progestin. It is a cream white or white powdered crystal with the chemical formula C22H28O3.

Uses

This medication is used to cure abnormal uterine bleeding in women. In women undergoing amenorrhea also aygestin is prescribed. Amenorrhea is a condition in which the menstrual periods have been discontinued from many months in non-pregnant women or those who have not yet crossed menopause. Additionally, this medicine is used to cure endometriosis in which the inner uterine lining is found outside the womb i.e. in pelvic area or abdomen causing irregular/painful periods. This medicine stops the usual growth of uterine lining in the menstrual cycle and causes hormonal variations in uterus to bring back the normal periods.

How to Use

This medicine is orally administered as recommended by the doctor. To avoid stomach problems, it is preferable to take the medicine with or after meal. To treat the stopped menstruation and unusual uterine bleeding, this drug is generally consumed daily once for 5 to 10 days during the 2nd half of the menstrual periods or as prescribed by the physician.

Side-Effects of Aygestin

Headache, mood swings, nausea, trouble in sleep, acne, vomiting, tender/swollen breast, undesirable hair growth, weigh loss/gain, dizziness or hair loss may take place. If any of these serious signs are observed, then immediately inform the doctor:

  • Variation in vaginal discharge
  • Micturition
  • Yellowing of skin/eyes
  • Depression
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Melasma (darkened patches on face or skin)
  • Blood clots
  • Jaw/left arm/chest pain
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Fainting
  • Severe trouble in breathing
  • Blood in cough

Any serious allergic reaction is rare. Anyways, if you observe rashes, swelling or itching of tongue/face/throat, difficulty in breathing or severe dizziness, then immediately report to the doctor or physician.

Contraindications of Aygestin

This medicine should not be used in some specific medical conditions. Before the intake of the drug, talk to your doctor and inform about your past medical issues, including: bleeding in brain, liver disorder, breast or any other organ cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, missed abortion, recent heart attack or stroke. Smoking should be avoided during the consumption of aygestin. As the smoke combines with this drug and increases the risks for hypertension, blood clots, strokes and heart attacks. Melasma caused by this drug may be worsened by sunlight. Avoid continuous sun exposure, sunlamps and tanning booths.

Aygestin Intake during Pregnancy

Aygestin is not recommended during pregnancy as it may be dangerous for the fetus, generally during the 1st four months. Birth defects may be caused by aygestin. Report the doctor instantly if you are pregnant or feel that there is a possibility of becoming pregnant. This drug penetrates the breast milk. Thus talk to your physician prior breast-feeding.

How Taken

You have to consult the doctor before taking Aygestin. The drug can be taken with or without food. You have to be careful to take the drug at the same time every day.

Missed Dose

If a dosage is missed, just take it when you remember it. But if it is time for the next dosage, skip it and continue with the regular dosage. You should not take double dosage.

More Information

You should not drive or do any hard work after taking Aygestin as it causes dizziness. The drug should only be taken by those for whom it has been prescribed.

Warnings/Precautions

You have to tell the doctor if you are allergic to a particular food, medicine or any other substance. You should also not hide if you are diabetic and has epilepsy, asthma, heart and kidney problems, migraine and depression.

You should not use Aygestin if pregnant. As the drug is found in breast milk, you should not breast feed while taking the drug.

It has been seen that certain medicines do not go along with Aygestin. So you have to discuss with your doctor if you are on any other medication. The drug also causes dark patches to appear on the face so it is better to use some sunscreen before going out.

The drug should also be avoided if you have a history of vaginal bleeding, blood clot, breast and genital cancer. Aygestin is not prescribed for children.
