Composition of Buscopan

This drug is available under many brand names and in multiple forms. Each white, sugar-coated, round tablet contains 10 mg hyoscine butylbromide. And the injection form is available in which each mL contains 10 mg hyoscine butylbromide. The chemical formula of hyoscine butylbromide is C21H30NO4+ and the molecular weight is 360 .467 g.

Uses

This drug is used to reduce the pain of the smooth muscle cramps (spasms) in the intestines, stomach, urethra and bladder. The smooth muscles of the intestines, urethra, stomach and bladder are relaxed under the action of hyoscine. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is also relieved by the use of buscopan.

How to use Buscopan

The usual dosage of buscopan is 10 mg tablets once or twice a day. If this medication has to be taken regularly, then the usual dose is one tablet 3-5 times in a day. The usual dose for the intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous injection is 10-20 mg. The maximum dosage in a day is 100 mg. The medicine has to be swallowed as a whole with water.

Side-Effects of Buscopan

  • Constipation

  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Tachycardia

Contraindications

This drug should not be taken along with MAOI (like linezolid, selegiline), tricyclic antidepressants, antacids, anticholinergics and antidiarrhea medicines (absorbent type). Take this medication at least 60 minutes before anti-diarrhea medicines and antacids. Buscopan is not advised to use when there is a bowel or stomach.This medication should not be used if you:

  • Show allergic reactions to hyoscine or other atropinics.
  • Are suffering from myasthenia gravis
  • Have enlarged colon (megacolon)
  • Have enlarged/blocked prostate (obstructive prostatic hypertrophy)
  • Have glaucoma.
  • Have vision disorders.
  • Have porphyria (uncommon blood pigment disease)
  • Prostate problems
  • Achalasia (difficulty in swallowing).

Additionally, this drug should not be taken in the form of injection if you:

  • Are receiving this medicine by injecting into the muscle and are consuming blood thinner drugs (like heparin, warfarin).
  • Have narrow GI (Gastrointestinal) tract.
  • Have heart disorder
  • Have angina
  • Have tachycardia

Pregnancy and Buscopan

During pregnancy, the use of buscopan is not advisable unless the advantages outrun the risks. Contact your physician or doctor immediately if you become pregnant while consuming this drug. It is yet not known whether hyoscine enters the human milk or not. If you are a nursing mother and are taking this medicine, it may influence your baby.
